"Of all the quadrupeds that lived upon this earth, probably no other marshaled such innumerable hosts as those of the North American bison. It would have been as easy to count or evaluate the number of leaves in a forest as to calculate the number of bison living at any one given time during the history of the species prior to 1870."

Providence Wood Bison
The ecological restoration of bison in North America hinges on two critical components of conservation:
  1. Conservation of Bison in its Natural Habitat
This untampered setting allows bison to be subjected to all naturally occurring environmental influences and contributes to the sustained ecology of their related habitats.

  2. Conservation of Bison Subspecies Genome
This controlled protection of the bison genome decreases the mean-relatedness and genetic drift within the total known gene pool of plains and wood bison populations.

Providence Wood Bison

With a passion for country-living and conservation, we entered bison preservation with our first calf-crop in 2002. We have established a small Wood Bison breeding population slightly south west of the historical wood bison range. Our continued hope, at Providence Wood Bison, is to:
  1. Maintain a government recognized, registered Wood Bison herd which represents an important reservoir of bison subspecies genetics for re-population of conservation herds.
  2. Provide a known genetic resource base for optimum application in commercial herds where carcass hybrid vigor is valued.
  3. Naturally range Wood Bison for public education, a wholesome culinary experience and provision of historical collectables.
